Used as a backdrop for photoshoots and filming and available through London locations agency 1st Option, this elegant house was built in 1745 for the Barclay family of Barclays Bank and was designed by renowned architect James Paine.
It’s a 10 bedroom Georgian villa style house surrounded by Capability Brown parkland and river. The house previously had another floor and a pitched roof, which was removed in the 40s when it was fashionable to have a flat roof on such houses. In addition to the main house there is a beautiful stable block with coach houses and an archway complete with clock. There are pictures of the house and stables in the V&A museum in London. To the east of the house there are 2 walled gardens, one was the original kitchen garden and the other the orchard. Within the outer wall there is a small cottage as well as a large arched greenhouse. The house is accessed by a mile long driveway that passes the original gatehouse, through woodland and the park. Today it’s owned by Simon Rayner – partner in PR firm Surgery Group – who has renovated it using traditional Georgian colours and sympathetic furnishings while drawing inspiration from the likes of Nicky Haslam and Ben Pentreath.
